Credit counseling encompasses a basic but thorough review of a consumer's entire financial picture. It should cover incomes, living expenses, fixed expenses, recurring expenses and consumer debt: whether it is secured or unsecured. Once all the details have been presented, the counselor, certified as a credit counselor by an independent agency, then proceeds to analyze the data for areas of inconsistency and possible improvements. Credit Counseling has as its goal, a quantification of what are the root cause of issues and the resolution of those root causes. Referral sources can be numerous as there are a variety of root causes that influence personal finances. These sources include, but are not limited to: bankruptcy, family counseling, debt management programs, gambling counseling, addiction counseling, etc.
